Our Team
Jemima
As well as being a mother to 3-year-old Scout, Jemima is a writer, teacher, artist and CBI-trained Postpartum Doula. Following the birth of her daughter, Jemima experienced postpartum anxiety and her own journey inspired her to reach out and help other new mothers navigate the incredible transition that occurs after giving birth. This took the form of an instagram page entitled Midnight Milkbar (so-named because it’s what her siblings called it when she messaged them late at night feeding her newborn baby). Tired of seeing the old, same antenatal rhetoric across social media, which focuses primarily on the birth and the baby rather than the mother, Jemima started creating content that highlighted the realities of the transition to motherhood, with the mega lows as well as the mega highs. Once Scout was heading into the toddler phase, Jemima trained as a doula and started developing her own resources and support system, offering no bullsh*t, compassionate, Mother-centred care and education that is geared for both physical and emotional wellbeing.
Romy
Romy is an ecologist by training, but has always been a ‘baby person’, volunteering at a Children’s Home in Joburg while still in high school and continuing with them for many years afterwards. When she gave birth to Maya in 2021, Romy had Jemima by her side to support her with her own challenges in early motherhood - an experience that solidified the concept and value of expert postpartum care for both women. Seeing firsthand the importance of this kind of support, Romy joined Jemima in her mission to create a comprehensive offering for new parents, which emphasises knowledge, information and choice in the postpartum period. She is the visuals expert and design member of the Midnight Milkbar team, as well as being able to offer her own maternal perspective in the creation of course content and support resources.
